In light of the world’s current events I have been thinking on what I want to communicate now and long after I am gone. What do I want to relay about the world to my children? How will I make my voice resonate as an African American wife, mother, professor daughter and sister? Is there something I can do to leave a small piece of history to the next generation? These thoughts have swirled in my mind for months now. The ongoing events of our world have inspired me to want to be an active part of the narrative of African Americans living today. I have a 3-step personal plan in place to ensure that I stay active and committed long after the headlines have changed. If there is one thing that the blatant and overt racism (caught on film) has taught me is that I can never get complacent. Working towards equality for my children and their children needs to stay top-of-mind. If there is one thing that Covid-19 has taught me is that I am not promised tomorrow.

My posture towards life has always been to do everything I can today, and if God wills it, to do everything I can the next day. With all that said, I had a moment of inspiration recently. I wanted to leave behind a virtual gallery that depicts a Black family during this period in time. It is my hope that this virtual gallery is shared with as many people as possible. In addition, I hope it brings a source of hope and comfort to all who see the photos. These photos represent the humanity of the members in a black family. This family, my family, wants to live, love, dream, and accomplish…just like any other family in the world. This African American family wants to build and leave behind a strong legacy to this generation and beyond. This beautiful Black family has roots in Haiti, and those roots have resulted in professionals whose children will be raised to reach for the stars, be productive citizens and serve the greater good.

The photos in this virtual gallery give a glimpse into the lives of a black family in the year 2020. Prayerfully, these photos will be circulated hundreds of years later by our great-great grandchildren and many others. My hope for these photos is that they amplify the voice and essence of the Black family. I also hope they satisfy the curiosity of those who want to discover what life was like in the year 2020.
